A well written story of Took and Madoc. Took being a handsome very clever recovering trauma victim (kidnapping, torture, turned vampire) and Madoc being a handsome ancient vampire and head of a special vampire investigation team. The story centers around a few mysteries that overlap with an mm romantic theme as well. There is world building done fairly lightly and skillfully. This doesn't just say "there are vampires, tra-la-la" with no exploration of the impact such a thing would have on human culture, politics, religion and meta-physical gods themselves. I felt the worldbuilding enriched the tale as well as feeding into complex motivations and characters. Layers to the magic/creatures and relationships are gradually exposed.This story has its gruesome moments and detailed physical violence. Serial murders.There are a number of spots with missing/extra words and a bit of a problem with continuity on one issue (one important conclusion is discussed many chapters before the agents "discover" it).I highly recommend this book and will definitely be buying the second....If you like the sound of Dead Man Stalking I recommend other series by T.A. The suspense was so good that all the free time I could get was spent reading, and it took a good chunk of time to get through too.There are a lot of questions raised that I'm sure will be addressed in later books, but it doesn't end in a cliffhanger, which is nice. Of course, I'll still be waiting impatiently for the next one.The world building was excellent and very unique. I've read a lot of vampire books, and there's a lot of originality that's hard to find. Plus there are dhampirs--my favorite type of vampire.If you enjoy vampires-and even if you don't--don't miss out on this one!
